Sausage Balls

By | December 4, 2020

Sausage Balls have become part of our Christmas tradition. This Sausage Ball recipe is one that my Grandfather started making back before I was even born! An in law of ours brought this recipe to our family. My Granddad loved it, but tweaked it a bit through the years. We made them every Christmas. I’ve continued the tradition by making them ahead of time, bagging them up, and freezing them. That way we can heat them up through the Christmas season and sometimes even in to the new year, because I double or triple the recipe.

I am happy that Drew and Caitlyn usually make these for me now. It is one less thing for me to have to prepare when all the Christmas baking and cooking is going on.

Drew & Caitlyn making Sausage balls
The tradition that my family now does with these Sausage balls is to have them on Christmas morning with Apple Dumplins.

Servings: 80 (depending on size)
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:
1 pound of regular sausage
1 pound of HOT sausage
2 cups of Cheddar cheese
2 cups of sharp cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups of Bisquick

GLUTEN FREE SUBSTITUTION – Use 1 cup of Gluten Free Bisquick instead

Ziplock bags

Directions:
Kneed all of these things together until it’s a uniform mixture.
Roll into balls a little smaller than golf ball size.
Preheat oven to 375°.
Cook for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes
After rolling into balls you can either place a serving into each ziplock bag and freeze. When I’m ready to bake them I defrost long enough to separate them out. The other option is to place them on a cookie sheet, close together, but not touching. Freeze them until hard. Then put them into ziplock bags so they don’t freeze together. No defrosting needed for this method, just pop them straight on to a cookie sheet and bake.

Every time I have these at a work function, they’re are served COLD. ICK!! I NEVER serve these cold.

I’ve seen several variations of this recipe, but have never tried these. I’m putting them on my ‘gotta try list’.

My mother makes these every Christmas and they do not last long! She says they are a pain to make, so I dread the day she passes the tradition down to me!
