Birthday Traditions

Birthday tablecloth. Our daughter has a “birthday tablecloth” and each year her hand and foot prints are painted on it with the year written & a special decoration to symbolize the year.

Birthday Journal Book.  Each year at the birthday party a journal book is passed around for family and friends to sign their names and/or write a message as well as to track the gifts.  This is a unique and cherished book to look at later in life.

Explore a small cake. On the first birthdays in our family the child has a small cake which they can explore and eat on their own. A series of photographs are taken of this event usually including tentative fingers and then faces in the cake.

Birthday poster.  Every  year on the child’s birthday a poster is made.  The poster represents all of the things that are pertinent to the birthday child. For example, the poster may contain drawings of a new puppy, favorite toys, new words or sayings.  We display the poster for all the party guests to see and then hang it in their bedrooms until it is replaced by a new one.

As I was looking for pictures to scan for ’98, I saw a picture of Drew drinking from his sippy cup at about 9 months. Alex is nearly 12 months old and doesn’t have a lot of desire to use a sippy cup and really doesn’t pick it up on his own, etc! So at dinner I tried to get him to drink out of it and again, not much luck! I went to the computer to see what the normal age is to be using a sippy cup, etc! It’s hard for me to remember all this since there’s such a big gap between kids! Anyway…so as I’m looking for sippy cup ages, I start seeing all these articles about sippy cups causing speech impetements, etc! I’ve never been one to raise my kids by the book. I do what I thinks best for my kids and whats best for the family as whole.

Anyway after doing more research I found other articles that said these were unsupported findings. People are always looking to find something wrong with something! It just drives me crazy! LOL!!

As for Alex…while writing this entry (off and on for the last hour) I gave Alex his sippy cup while playing in his play pin…he sucked it down…all 4 oz! I’m excited! So I think I need to start reducing the number of bottles will help.

Drew earlier:

“Mom, I have a question for ya. What does the tooth fairy do with all the teeth after she takes them away?”

Me:
“I don’t know, what do you think?”

Drew:
“I think she takes them somewhere and uses them to build something with!”

You gotta love these innocent conversations!

At the end of January, I decided to make a Dinner Menu for February and see how it worked. That way I know what ingredients I need and when, so I’m more prepared. Rob has really enjoyed it too, as he says we haven’t had the same thing in almost a month now! LOL! I had been in a Hamburger Helper everynight mode, which was not fun! The menu idea at first seemed like it would be more trouble than it was worth, but it’s working out nicely! Just thought I’d share that as I eat my new recipe for Chili Mac! YumYum!

Ok! Driving on or near campus is just not fun! It just brings me back in time…traffic, pedestrians, no parking spots, parking cops giving tickets, people running red lights, ETC!! And THAT was just getting there!

Yesterday I did my presentation that I ranted and raved about a while back…GLAD to have that over with! I just HOPE and PRAY that I don’t get “chosen” for anymore!

Last night, I watched the last hour and half of Gone With the Wind, which I think is the most I’ve seen of the movie at one time!! My Grandmother loves that movie. I would really like to see the whole thing through from beginning to end. It is just an amazing classic and to think it was made in 1939!!! WOW!!

Like I said on my comments below, certain IE versions the sub menus don’t work. I got rid of all borders in the menus. I don’t think that will make a difference, but let me know if that works any better.

THANKS

Do me a favor! Check out my new family website. You should be able to pull menus down on “us”, “vacations”, “pics” and they have sub menus that come out from the side that you can click on. The others will have drop down menus that you can click on (no sub menus). If something doesn’t work, let me know exactly what it is and what browser and version you are using. I’ve tried it on several browsers PC and mac. You must have JAVA turned on in your browser preferences.

If you have any problems, let me know.

THANKS

When i try to get to the sub menus, they go away when i hit the border of the main drop down.  if i’m really quick and move over fast I can sometimes get to them.  I don’t know if you can change the timing or if you need to reduce the padding/border width.  I hope this helps.  I have a PC (Windows 2000) and using IE 6.0.  I just checked it on Mozilla Firefox and it works fine on that.  🙂

Thanks! On certain IE versions the sub menus don’t work and I’m not sure how to make them work…I’m looking into, but now that I have the main links on the first drop down menus I’m not quite as concerned. I’ll let yall know if I find a solution to make it work!

THis JAVA stuff is complicated for my brain!! LOL!!!!!!

We went to the AU baseball game tonight and I took quite a few pictures. Here’s a few in black and white, which I love! I think I’m going to wait and post a baseball game album in a few weeks after I get lots more pictures. It’s late and my eyes are killing me…more tomorrow!

Ok, well…I got my hair to do something. I put it in rollers and it look ok. If I had my camera, I’d take a pic and show you, but Rob has it. I’ll get used to it! Rob and Drew are in Florida now. I’m hanging out. Alex is sleeping. Nick is watching TV in the living room. Rosie (the dog) is at my feet. I’ve been cleaning and washing clothes. I rented some movies, but I’m probably going to wait and watch them tomorrow. I had invited a friend from work over to watch them, but she’s busy tonight. She said she could do it tomorrow night, so maybe that’s what we’ll do.

I’m gonna go read some more blogs and probably clean some more…….

Have you ever gotten your hair cut and afterward you want to say “OH MY GOSH…LET ME HAVE MY HAIR BACK PLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAASE!!!????” That’s how I’m feeling now!! My hair was getting really long and it’s been almost a year since I’ve had it cut. I got it cut the week before Alex was born. So I said I wanted it right below the shoulder….she cut it right below my EAR!!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH!!! I’m sad! I’m trying to figure out now what I can do with it. I can bearly pull it back in a pony tail without it falling out on the side….

Booooooooooo for haircuts you don’t ask for!!!! I got some pretty short hair myself, but it’s always short. She just whacked it EXTRA good this time, heheh… Just think it’ll grow back though and probably pretty quick… I’m trying to be optimistic for you 🙂

Rob took Alex to the doc today. He has his 1st ear infection and is wheezing. So he’s on an antibiotic and Albuterol. Poor thing! He’s been sleeping since I got home, but he needs the rest.

Rob and Drew are going to Tallahassee Friday for the weekend for the AU vs. FSU baseball series. Boys weekend out, I guess you might say! I was really looking forward to the weekend with just me and Alex. Rob’s brother is staying with us as he is trying to move here soon (find a job, apartment, etc). No biggie.

What a day!! There is something going on with these 5th graders!!! They are just crazy!!

Poor Alex is suffering from this awful crud!! He’s been running a fever, but we’re keeping it down with Tylenol. I was up with him last night, but he woke up happy and seems to be feeling good.

Drew is participating in his school’s Read-a-thon. It is amazing how he’s learned to read. It’s a great feeling knowing your child can read! I know that sounds cheezy, but as a 5th grade teacher who has students who don’t know all thier letter sounds, it can be scary!

I’m excited to hear from “old” friends!

Wow! Tomorrow Alex will be 11 months old. I need to start thinking about his 1 year party. I just can’t believe how fast time goes by! I was looking at Candi’s new pics and it seems like she just had her 2nd son, but he’s 6 months old now! Sheesh!

Today we actually made it to church before Sunday School! Lately we’ve been sleeping and I haven’t been setting the alarm, so we couldn’t make it on time. But we did good today! Then we went straight to the AU baseball game. We pulled off a win in the bottom of the 9th! Then, we let Drew stay for the autograph session. He really loves the AU players as he continues to meet more and more of them. He’s also been learning how to take score. Drew will be playing machine pitched baseball starting in April, which we signed him up for yesterday (a whopping $65 to play!!)

I’m still on a cleaning rampage. I’m working on my closet still. Rob decided he’s going to redo our filing cabinet so I’ve been trying to find everything that needs to go in the filing cabinet. I’m taking the little filing cabinet to my work. I’ve also been bagging up baby clothes. I just have to keep some of the stuff. I’ve kept a few of Drew’s baby outfits and some that were T’s.

I guess I’m gonna go. CYA

Have you ever noticed your children narrate everything!!! Sometimes you just listen and you’re like “WHY ARE YOU TALKING???” LOL…or am I the only one to be so privileged?

This is Drew:
“I’m going to draw now so I need to find my crayons. Where are they? I don’t know where they’re at! I’m going to get some paper and I’m doing to cut out a heart….” and on and on and on!!!!

I’ve got an awful headache. I think it’s all this sinus stuff that I’ve got going on. I was supposed to be going to the baseball game, but I’m just feeling BLAH! This is me…

Drew said last night, “Mom, you’re just the best mom even when you don’t do things I like, your still the best mom! You know just the bestest mom in the world!”

You gotta love it!

Idea from t4tots!

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to any page.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in my comment box.
5. Don’t search around and look for the “coolest” book you can find. Do what’s actually next to you!
(feel free to tell us what book it is or leave us hanging LOL)

Here’s mine:

“And guess what else?”
Drew’s library book: “Junie B. Jones Smells Something Fishy”

“Sandy heard that liquid squelching sound again.”  From “From a Buick 8” by Stephen King.

The fifth sentence from page 165 of the hardcover edition.  That’s funny!  It’s the closest book on my nightstand, although, not the one I’m currently reading.   🙂
