Oh how proud my Grandmother would be! My Grandmother (Wells) who raised me along with my Granddad was a genealogy junkie. She’s supposedly traced our family back to Adam and Eve. Researching our family was her main hobby and anytime we traveled she usually had to stop at a library or a cemetery to do some research. Several years ago, I decided to check out a local cemetery here in Auburn that is the resting place for many important Auburn folks.
Among those include:
George Petrie – Author of “Auburn Creed” as well as the father of Auburn Football who coached the first team in 1892.
Charles Thach – Auburn University’s president from 1902-1919
Dr. Charles Cary – a veterinarian known throughout the country
Lucky Meager – started the first kindergarten class in Auburn
Reverand Billy Mitchell – buried above ground on a double bed with his boots under his bed inside a brick mausoleum
Virginia Howe – 16 yo girl who was first buried in her front yard
There are also many past Auburn mayors, lawyers, doctors, and many Auburn professors are buried.
Here’s pics of this historic place…
Here is a the grave of an 8 year old boy who died due to an allergic reaction from an insect bite. What’s ironic about this is that his dad was an Entomologist. Unfortunately as you can see this memorial statue has been quite vandalized over the years missing head, arms, and more.
