1. June 10th is National Herbs and Spices Day. Besides salt and pepper, what herb or spice container do you reach for most often? Is there a spice you truly dislike? What’s a recent dish you made that called for more than salt and pepper?
Garlic powder and red pepper flake are my go to spices. I also use a lot of basil, onion powder, and cayenne. I am not a big fan of fennel seeds. I make a taco soup that calls for taco seasoning, which I typically just make my own and that has a lot of seasonings in it.

2. It’s been said ‘variety is the spice of life’…in what way is this true for you? Elaborate.
Although, I am a creature of habit in many ways, I like to try new foods, see new places, and try new things…sometimes. I think “Variety is the spice of life” highlights the beauty of life’s unpredictability—the way fresh experiences, perspectives, and adventures bring excitement. Picture eating the same meal daily or playing one song on repeat forever. Pretty monotonous, right? Just as spices enhance flavors, variety enriches life, making it more vibrant and fulfilling. It’s a gentle nudge to welcome change, explore new paths, and break out of routine.

3. What’s something in your life that adds ‘spice’ (excitement, intensity) even if also comes with challenge or unpredictability?
Auburn University sports adds a spiciness to my life with excitement and intensity through passionate rivalries, electrifying atmospheres, and unforgettable victories. The roar of Jordan-Hare Stadium, the energy of Auburn Arena, and traditions like “War Eagle” unite fans in a shared thrill. The highs and lows of competition build resilience, camaraderie, and lasting memories, making every game an experience to savor.

4. If you could instantly master one skill or hobby, what would it be and why?
Crochet. My Granny crocheted all the time. She always sat with a new blanket in her lap that she was crocheting. I never had any interest in learning and now I could just kick myself for not having her teach me.

5. We’re halfway through the year…what’s one book, movie, or activity you’ve loved this year that you’d recommend to others?
I’m just about to finish up a podcast that is mind blowing. I’m going to share about it at the end of the month in my Watching and Listening post, but its what comes to mind with this question. It’s called Blink. Check it out!

6. Insert your own random thought here.
With the what bring spice to your life, I first thought about family, but they really bring sweetness…
Family brings warmth and joy, much like the sweetness in a favorite dessert. They celebrate your victories, lift you in tough times, and create moments of laughter and love that make life richer. Whether through shared traditions, comforting words, or unconditional support, family has a way of turning ordinary days into something special. Their presence reminds you that no matter what, you’re never truly alone.

  1. How did everyone’s grandmother knit or crochet? LOL – I feel like its going to be a lost art. I loved to do yarn things but my bicep issues make it so hard now.
We’re the same on red pepper flakes – give that kick to everything!

So true about family. I love the family picture. We are hoping to go to an Auburn FB game this fall, especially since it will be Jack’s last year! Time has flown by!

  3. I also don’t like fennel; it’s gross! And I too wish I could crochet. My mom does it and I just don’t make time to learn.

My mom can crochet, but she would not even try to teach me, because she is left handed I am right. I did learn to knit, but I only do simple patterns.

  5. Tennessee football makes my heart race too. You can never relax no matter how far ahead or behind they are : ) I don’t think it’s too late for you to crochet. One of my friends recently taught herself using youtube videos. Great family photo!

  6. I get the spice of a sports team and the stadium vibes and all the cheering together, etc. Love your random thought about family and that is a sweet photo!

My Grandma taught me to crochet when I was young too, and I didn’t keep it up at all. I do wish I’d kept at it, as I don’t think I could crochet more than a single chain at this point. My daughter learned to crochet and does a great job though. I loved your random thought about the sweetness of family – so well said! Hope you’re having a great week, with just the right amount of spice and sweetness!

  8. I wish I could crochet or at least knit better too! It’s a great hobby to keep your hands busy.
