A Sweet Holiday Side Dish Favorite

Green beans don’t have to be just savory. When I set out to create a sweet twist for Rob’s Thanksgiving work lunch, I discovered that Southern candied green beans are that dish—comforting, festive, and shockingly crowd-pleasing. These are now my go-to for holidays, church dinners, or any day I want a side dish that surprises people in the best way.

Ingredients:
4 cans of green beans
1 cup of finely chopped yellow onion
5 pieces of bacon, chopped
1 tsp of minced garlic
1 cup of brown sugar
1/3 cup of sugar
1 stick of butter
Dash of salt and pepper

Directions:
1. Brown bacon in the bottom of a pan. Add in garlic, onions, and butter. Allow bacon to cook through and onions caramelize.
2. Whisk in sugar and brown sugar. Make sure there are no clumps of brown sugar.
3. Bring to a simmer and carefully stir in green beans. Lower heat so that the bottom of the pan doesn’t stick. Make sure to get green beans coated with sauce. Allow to heat for about 10 minutes.

  1. Green beans are one of my favorite vegetables. I am always looking to find a way to add “spire” to my beloved veggie.
