This post is continuation of our big Mountain West Trip we did. Here’s the first post in case you missed it>>>Mountain West Trip – Colorado Springs

Mountain West Trip:Wyoming Road Trip

We got up that morning and checked out of our hotel in Castle Rock and headed to Wyoming, with romantic country music sang by a good Romantic country music songwriter playing in our car for a fun trip! Our final destination for that day was Casper, WY, where Drew has been since May. While I was so anxious to see him, I was excited to see more of Wyoming and explore it a little more in depth than the last time we were there.

People say these wind farms are eye sores, but coming from the South where we don’t have these, I think they’re pretty cool looking. And quite fascinating.

We drove through the Capital of Wyoming, Cheyenne as you see in the 2 middle pics below.

Gorgeous views that are so different from anything we’ve ever seen.

Lunch was at the Luxury Diner. I found this while google searching for places to eat in Cheyenne. It’s an old railroad car they’ve expanded and made into a still small restaurant. Very cool. Good food.

The stretch from Cheyenne to Laramie is only about 50 miles, but there is so much to see in between. We took 80 and was so glad we did. Here’s some of the quick stops you can make along the way.

Tree in the Rock is located right in the middle of Interstate 80, between Cheyenne and Laramie, in southeast Wyoming is an interesting tree. A limber pine, which is common to the area. However, this one is growing out of a solid granite boulder!

Ames Monument is a large pyramid dedicated to the Ames Brothers who were the financiers for the Union Pacific Railroad.

Leaving the monument we spotted this guy camouflaged in front of that rock. He obliged for a few seconds and let me get his picture.

Next stop about 8 miles up the road was Vedauwoo Recreational Area. Such amazing rocks that reach 500 feet. We saw several rock climbers up at the top. These rock formations were created by wind, ice, and water. Just another amazing sight to see in Wyoming.

After leaving Vedauwoo, we saw signs to Turtle Rock, which you see here. We were going to drive over to it, but for some reason decided to head on.

Sherman Mountains – During this trip I really fell in love with the long roads in Wyoming. So many different landscapes. I just loved every minute of it.

While there’s only so much excitement that you can get from a giant head, the Uinta Chipmunks that were running around the base of it were. I could have sat for hours watching and photographing them.

Next up was the Dinosaur Graveyard and Como Bluff Fossil Cabin Museum
US Hwy 30, Medicine Bow, WY
When we were there it wasn’t open, but we walk around the outside and got neat pics. I didn’t realize that supposedly the museum building is said to be made out of dinosaur bones!

We also passed by the Virginian Hotel, which is a Historic Landmark. It was built in 1901 and is massive in size considering the size of the town of Medicine Bow. You can stay there now.

These animals here are called Pronghorn. We don’t see these in the south much. In fact we call them Antelope. You see tons of them driving through Wyoming.

We finally rolled into Casper just as Drew’s game was starting. Remember he was an intern for the Casper Horseheads. We checked into the hotel and walked over to the stadium. I was so excited to see him up in the press box. That first night we were there, he was in charge of running music and sounds for the game.

When he got done with work he came over to the hotel and we decided to grab dinner at Denny’s.

We thought the Wyoming landscape was pretty neat too. We stayed in Cheyenne overnight and were amazed that even on the weekend by 6pm or so most things were closed up. It was such a small capital city for such a big state!
