West Coast Trip:Day 10 Oregon Coast

Day 10 was all about the Oregon Coast. We started off with a lumberjack breakfast at Camp 18 Restaurant. This place is a must see. Every time Rob and I drive up the coast we stop and get pictures outside. This was our first time we stopped to eat. Camp 18 is housed in a beautiful, huge log cabin building. There is a vast number of wood carvings all around the property as well as old logging machinery and even some old train cars that are being restored for different purposes.

All the meals are hardy and delicious. You have to save room for a cinnamon roll though. As you can see they are BIG and totally worth the $6 or $7 that they cost.

This is the backside of the restaurant. There’s a creek that runs behind it that adds to the picturesque atmosphere.

I highly recommend a stop here to eat, walk around, and time to enjoy all the things to look at.

Nest stop was where the 750+ year giant Sitka Spruce tree lived before it was blown down several year ago. The Klootchy Creek County Park is where you’ll find the very large stump of what used to be a 216 foot tree. So sad. Click here to zoom in to read the sign below.

Ecola State Park was next on our list. There was quite a line of traffic to get in. In fact, we were worried there might not be any parking at the Ecola State Parking Lot. However, there were several spots where we wanted to park. It seemed that most people were going to Indian Beach, which has its own parking lot further down the road. We got some shots with Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock in the background. I mean really? One of my favorite photo spots in the world.

This view may seem familiar to you if you’re a fan of the movie Goonies.

We followed the trail from the view point and ended up taking a hike with steep drop off that landed us near Ecola Point. Really awesome location. When you get down to the beach there’s a cave and if it’s not high tide you can walk into it. I stayed up and didn’t take the hike down to the beach, but the boys went. (Click map below to enlarge)

After the guys made their way back up, we loaded back in the car and headed towards Astoria. Astoria is a cute little port city that sits near the Columbia River where it meets up with the Pacific Ocean. A cool little fact about Astoria is that it was the first settlement on the Pacific coast and was the first place west of the Rocky Mountains to have a post office!

Astoria is also the town that is the home to the kids in the movie Goonies. There are several locations in town that were featured in the movie. We drove by the house where the Walsh’s lived but there are signs adamtly saying not to take pictures, etc. So we moved on.

After that we actually back tracked to Cannon Beach and parked near the beach. We spent time exploring sea anemones. You used to could walk out closer to Haystack rock during lowtide, but now it’s not allowed.

Next it was Tillamook time! Tillamook Creamery has a factory where you can go watch them make cheese. Their cheese is the best. Literally! However, we were there late afternoon on July 3rd, so they let their workers go home for the 4th of July. We went and got some samples and then left.

We found a Tillamook ice cream shop in downtown Tillamook so since the lines were so long at the factory we went there to get our ice cream fix. Their ice cream is the creamiest, best flavor ice cream I’ve ever had!

We ended this day by going to one of Rob’s favorite places to eat in the world, Chang’s Mongolian Grill.

See all the pic from the day here.
